In a not so great move, Airtel has decided to charge its customer for VoIP calls made through its network even if you have active 3G or 2G data pack. On the official websites of Airtel, company has mentioned this new rule on its terms and conditions page.
That means now all the VoIP calls made through Skype and Viber kind of applications will be charged according to the data it consumes and the data will not be deducted from your data pack.
Airtel mentions on its website’s policy page:
All Internet/data packs or plans (through which customer can avail discounted rate) shall only be valid for internet browsing and will exclude VoIP (Both incoming/ Outgoing). VoIP over data connectivity would be charged at standard data rates of 4p / 10 KB (3G service) and 10p / 10 KB (2G service).
The change in policy may not be just a random act, but might have been introduced after WhatsApp’s plans for introducing voice calling feature in the app. It remains to be seen if all other carriers including Tata Docomo and Vodafone makes similar move.
